JPG File Format

JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used image format on the internet. It uses lossy compression that dramatically reduces file size by selectively discarding visual data the human eye is least sensitive to. A typical photograph compressed to JPG at 85% quality retains full visual fidelity at roughly 5–10% of its original uncompressed size.

JPG is ideal for photographs, product images, and any image with continuous colour gradients. Its key limitation is no support for transparency — transparent areas are rendered as white or a solid background colour. For images requiring transparency, use PNG or WebP instead.

WebP File Format

WebP is an open image format developed by Google and released in 2010. It uses predictive compression and supports both lossy and lossless modes, making it the most versatile format for web delivery. WebP images are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and 26% smaller than PNG in lossless mode.

WebP supports alpha transparency (like PNG), animation (like GIF), and excellent compression (better than JPG). All modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, and Edge — support WebP natively. It is the recommended format for all web images today. Use our JPG to WebP converter or PNG to WebP converter above to switch instantly.

PNG File Format

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression — every pixel is preserved exactly as-is. This makes PNG the standard choice for logos, icons, UI screenshots, and any image where sharpness and transparency are required. PNG files are larger than JPG or WebP for photographic content, but cannot be improved without quality loss.

PNG supports full alpha transparency, making it the go-to for design assets exported from tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe Illustrator. When file size matters more than lossless fidelity, convert PNG to WebP using our PNG to WebP converter — WebP lossless mode is 26% smaller than PNG with no quality compromise.

Convert Other Formats to WebP

WebP is the best format for web delivery — smaller files, transparency support, and universal browser support.

Convert from JPG

JPG is the most common photo format. Convert it to PNG for transparency, WebP for web performance, or PDF for documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about converting image formats online.

What image formats can I convert?

The converter supports JPG (JPEG), PNG, WebP, and BMP. You can convert between any pair — JPG to PNG, PNG to WebP, WebP to JPG, BMP to PNG, and all other combinations.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All conversion runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device and are never sent to any server.

When should I convert JPG to WebP?

Convert to WebP when optimising images for the web. WebP is 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality and is supported by all modern browsers. Smaller images mean faster pages and better Core Web Vitals scores.

Does converting an image lose quality?

Converting to lossy formats (JPG, WebP lossy) reduces quality based on your quality slider setting. Converting from PNG to WebP at high quality gives excellent results with minimal visible difference. Re-saving JPG to JPG multiple times compounds quality loss (generation loss).

What happens to transparency when converting PNG to JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas become white. To preserve transparency, convert to WebP or PNG — both support alpha transparency.

Why is WebP better than JPG for websites?

WebP was built by Google for web delivery. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, handles transparency (unlike JPG), and produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality. All modern browsers support WebP natively.

Can I convert multiple images at once?

Yes. Upload multiple files at once, set your format and quality, and convert them all in one go. Each file downloads individually.
